If you celebrate your 55th birthday in 2025, you’re in the company of a host of famous faces – including Naomi Campbell and Matt Damon. But what else was going on in 1970?

Here we look back at some of the things that made 1970 such a memorable year.

The Equal Pay Act
In May 1970, the UK Parliament passed the Equal Pay Act, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at addressing gender-based pay disparities in the workplace. This law required that men and women be paid equally for the same work or work of equal value. The act was largely a response to the 1968 strike by female machinists at the Ford plant in Dagenham, whose protests against unequal pay had captured national attention. While its full implementation would take several years, the Equal Pay Act was a significant step toward gender equality in the UK, influencing subsequent legislation and societal attitudes about women's roles in the workforce.

The Death of Jimi Hendrix in London
On September 18, 1970, the music world was rocked by the untimely death of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix in London. Hendrix, widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, was found unresponsive at the Samarkand Hotel in Notting Hill. His death at the age of 27 added to the growing list of iconic musicians lost too soon, later associated with the infamous 27 Club. His final performances, including a memorable set at the Isle of Wight Festival weeks before his death, remain iconic in the annals of music history.

The Founding of Earth Day
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated, marking a pivotal moment in the modern environmental movement. Organised by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and environmental activist Denis Hayes, Earth Day brought millions of people together to raise awareness about environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation, and the loss of biodiversity. The event inspired widespread grassroots activism and led to significant legislative achievements, including the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) later that year.

The tax treatment of pensions in general and tax implications of pension withdrawals will be based on individual circumstances, tax legislation and regulation, which are subject to change in the future.

Accessing pension benefits early may impact on levels of retirement income and your entitlement to certain means tested benefits and is not suitable for everyone. You should seek advice to understand your options at retirement.
