If you celebrate your 60th birthday in 2025, you’re in the company of a host of famous faces – including actors Robert Downey Jr, Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Rock. But what else was going on in 1965?
Here we look back at some of the things that made 1965 such a memorable year.
The Beatles Receive MBEs
In 1965, The Beatles solidified their place not just in music but in British culture when they were awarded MBEs by Queen Elizabeth II. The announcement sparked both celebration and controversy, with some traditionalists criticising the decision to honour pop musicians. The band, however, represented the spirit of the 1960s, and their music had become a global phenomenon. That same year, The Beatles released the album Help! and the accompanying film, showcasing their growing artistry and influence. Their recognition as MBEs symbolised a shift in British society, where popular culture was gaining prestige alongside more traditional forms of achievement.
Death of Winston Churchill
On January 24, 1965, Sir Winston Churchill passed away at the age of 90. As Prime Minister during World War II, Churchill led the nation through its darkest hours. His death marked the end of an era, and his state funeral on January 30 was a moment of national mourning. Millions watched the televised procession as his coffin travelled along the Thames aboard the Havengore.
First Spacewalk by Alexei Leonov
On March 18, 1965, Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov became the first human to perform a spacewalk, an extraordinary milestone in space exploration. During the Voskhod 2 mission, Leonov exited the spacecraft and floated freely in space, tethered only by a 16-foot cord. The spacewalk lasted about 12 minutes and demonstrated the feasibility of human extravehicular activity, a critical capability for future space missions. However, the mission faced significant challenges, including Leonov’s spacesuit inflating in the vacuum of space, making it difficult for him to re-enter the spacecraft. Despite the risks, this achievement highlighted the Soviet Union's continued dominance in the early stages of the Space Race.
